I talk to a lot of people who have a lot of great ideas for a business. I’ve heard some really inspirational, life changing ideas. I’ve gotten so excited by some I’ve actually jumped up and down and squealed! Here’s the thing though, your idea is just an idea until you can tell me how it’s going to make money.
The truth is, there are probably a lot of you out there reading this who quite frankly, are in denial. You say you have a business, but you have never made a sale. Or if you have made a sale, you are yet to make a profit. Maybe you are “pricing it really low to get people interested/ get the name out there/ promote my brand”.
Until you can tell me how your idea is going to make money, it’s just an idea, not a business.
Time and time again, people with a great idea for a business get stuck going through their start up process the wrong way around.
Time and time again, I see people spending $1000, $5000, more on logo’s, websites, “complete branding solutions” before they have made even one sale.
Here’s the big secret those marketing and branding “experts” don’t want you to know.
Your branding is not something that is created on paper, in an office, by you or your creative.
Your Brand is a result of Sales.
Because what is sales really, other than being of service with that you do? The delivery of your core product or service? The delivery, and the value of what you deliver has far, far greater impact on the perception of your brand than any clever artwork, slogan or colour combination.
You can put your mission statement in front of a prospect a thousand times, but if I purchase from you the communication is poor, the package arrives weeks later, the invoice is handwritten on a scrap of paper, and there is no follow up do you really think that the money you spent developing your “brand” is going to retain me as a customer?
Sales is the one thing that defines your brand.
Sales is the one thing that you must get right above all others.
Sales is the one thing you need to start doing right now, before you do anything else.
Sales is the one thing that puts cash in your bank.
Sales is the one thing that gives you the best market research.
Sales is the one thing that makes your business meaningful.
Sales is the one thing that demonstrates your VALUE to your prospect and clients.
Not your logo. Not your colours. Not your mission statement or your slogan. Not your domain name, or the google adwords, or your facebook page.
Sales is the one things that defines your business.
Don’t you think it’s worth getting that right?
