I was in a cool little function room in St Kilda this week with a small group of my wonderful clients. We were heads down, bums up, learning, working, testing, trying… At one stage I had one of the gang say this to everyone:
“I guess I just don’t do it because I’m lazy…”
As business owners, how many of us have said this to ourselves? It’s one of those really big lies we tell ourselves. This guy has built a profitable and successful business from scratch, in a country town, has just moved house, and is launching a brand new business on top of what he’s already doing. Lazy? No way.
On the second day, I threw them unawares into a room that looked very different to the day before. Instead of notebooks and pens, there were big sheets of white paper waiting them. Instead of a whiteboard, there were charcoal sticks and music in the room. Instead of a powerpoint screen, a nude model… We were there for a life drawing class facilitated by the amazing Amanda from Roar Drawing.
It was fascinating to observe each of them, and listen to what they said before we got started-
“I’m not creative at all.”
“I don’t have a creative bone in my body.”
“My husband’s the artist, not me.”
And sure, if you looked at the very first drawing we all did, you’d probably say the same things about us. But Amanda understood why I wanted her to teach them, and in her unique way, she teased the inner artist out of each of us. She helped us tap into the creative person we are, but tell ourselves we’re not.
So many people are afraid of the white page. They get stuck with writer’s block, or put off doing something new in their business simply because they’ve never done it before.
Making a single mark on the page, writing anything, doing SOMETHING in your business, even the wrong thing, is always better than doing nothing.
Too many people do nothing. They let the white page defeat them. They choose to stay in their comfortable place of what they have always done, or where they have always been, and settle for the same. Or worse- the world moves on, and they get left behind.
Doing something, even the wrong thing is far better than choosing to stay in “overwhelm”. And yes, it is a choice. When you say, “oh, I can’t make a decision on that today”, actually you are. You are choosing to NOT make a decision. You are choosing to NOT move, to not take action.
You are giving into the white page.
It’s all information, to help you choose and decide and create next time.
The ad that didn’t work, ok. This is where I think it went wrong, so I’ll change that next time…
That product didn’t sell, is it because it’s a bad product or bad marketing? Lets test and see…
Being in business is an inherently creative exercise. You have to get comfortable with making fast decisions, exploring new ideas, taking risks! You have to get comfortable with learning new skills, almost every single day. Getting better, going backwards, but never giving up, learning, and practicing.
You won’t know how it’s going to turn out, but if you never try, instead of a work of art that you can be proud of, you’ll still be left with a blank white page.
Create. Explore. Take risks. Learn. Grow.
